Back in the 1980s I worked a lot with a quite marvellous pianist from Lancashire, the late Stan Barker, and for around eight years we were artists in residence at Southport Arts Centre. Every month on Tuesday evenings we played duo sessions in the Arts Centre bar and at one point the great jazz critic-commentator Steve Voce (who still writes for 'Jazz Journal' in 2016) came over to record us 'live' for his jazz radio programme on BBC Radio Merseyside. After the broadcasts went out on-air Steve very generously gave me the tapes. And although I've recorded a lot since I think these are probably the best examples of all of my solo playing - which is why I've called the album 'The Definitive Duets' - and why it appears at the top of this list. I'm also very proud that my good friend Warren Vache Junior - who, for me, is the greatest jazz cornettist alive - has lent his pen to some very complimentary liner-notes for the album. Thanks Warren!
